Volume 34 of the New Liszt Edition contains free arrangements made by Liszt in 1840 and 1841, which include many well-known and popular large operatic fantasies. Alongside the paraphrases and reminiscences on motifs from Lucrezia Borgia, Don Juan, Norma, I puritani and Robert le diable, the volume contains a piano transcription of seven Mendelssohn songs, the Hussitenlied; and an arrangement of one of Meyerbeer's melodramas. Special features are the Cavatina on a theme by Auber, and the first edition of a piano piece based on an unfamiliar theme.
The blue hard clothbound edition containing a critical commentary and a detailed description of the sources, and the practical soft paper bound edition are, like previous volumes in the series, illustrated with facsimiles of Liszt's manuscripts.
